The 3 Most Common Mistakes We See During a Fitting

Want to get the most out of your next custom fitting? Here’s what to avoid.

By Lenny's Staff

Getting custom fit is one of the smartest things you can do for your game. But after thousands of fittings at Lenny’s, we’ve seen a few patterns that can limit how much value a golfer actually gets from the process.

Here are three of the most common mistakes we see—and how to avoid them:

  1. Bringing unrealistic expectations
A fitting isn’t about chasing distance—it’s about matching your gear to your swing. We can absolutely help you gain distance, but the real goal is optimizing consistency, accuracy, and feel. If you come in expecting a miracle cure, you might miss how much improvement is already happening.

  2. Not speaking up about what matters to you
A fitting should be a two-way conversation. If you don’t tell us what you struggle with—or what you’re trying to accomplish—we can’t tailor the session to your game. Whether it’s distance gaps, launch windows, or confidence at address, don’t be afraid to speak up. It makes all the difference.

  3. Assuming you need all new clubs
This one’s big. You don’t always need to overhaul your bag. Sometimes, a shaft change or lie angle tweak is all it takes. Our job is to recommend what’s best for your game—not what’s on the newest rack. Be open-minded, but don’t feel pressured to rebuild everything if your current clubs still work.

Key takeaway:
Custom fitting works best when you come in with the right mindset. Focus on your goals, ask questions, and remember: we’re here to help you find the right gear—not sell you something you don’t need.
